São Luís é a única capital brasileira fundada por franceses e colonizada por portugueses, por isso exibe em suas ruas verdadeiras uma arquitetura colonial tão marcante e diversa. Na parte urbana, é dividida entre o centro histórico e os novos bairros comerciais. A orla é banhada pela Baía de São Marcos, nas águas mornas do oceano Atlântico, formando praias de areias escuras e mar tranqüilo. Ponta d´Areia, São Marcos e Olho d’Agua são as praias mais famosas.
Desde 1997 é Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade tombado pela Unesco, especialmente seu centro histórico com mais de três mil e quinhentas casas e prédios tomabados.
